English HORIZONTAL MAGNETIC DIAL
c. 1825

Turned wood, brass, glass, and pasteboard; the combined compass-card and dial-plate was printed from an engraved plate. Signed, "S. Porter Fecit"; undated. Pasted inside the cover is a printed paper label, which reads, "Patronized by the KING PORTER'S MAGNETIC SUN DIAL" and "Floating on an Agate Cap" [this refers to the cap in the centre of the compass-card, which rests on the pivot].

A similar dial in the collection of the late Professor Boyd Dawkins, was signed, "Samuel Porter Norfolk Place Shacklewell near London" "April 7th 1823".
