Some 18th-century navigational instruments record not just the maker and the buyer, but even give an exact date of the purchase [2]. Instruments could also be prizes: "TO H. L. FANSHAWE ROYLE, For progress in Study and use of Sextant. H.M.S. BRITANNIA. 1864." [1].
