Inscribed on an ivory plaque let into the cross strut: "Made. by. Thos. Howard. Liverpool. For. Mr. Joseph. Hunter. March. 30. 1769".
Mahogany, ivory and brass; radius 15 3/4 inch. Ivory scale, engraved in 1/3 degree intervals from 0-90°, with 5° extensions at either end. Ivory vernier divided in minute intervals to 20 minutes. Two red shades.
The former owner of this octant, Joseph Todhunter, of Whitehaven, Cumberland, was born in 1739 and died in 1817.
