Spanish MARINER'S ASTROLABE
c.1600

Bronze; unsigned and undated, but inscribed "{A star above}" at the bottom. The alidade is a replacement. The calibration in degrees is in one quadrant only, and the scale is marked 90°-0° and o°-90°. This instrument was discovered in a wreck in the port of Vera-Cruz. It weighs more than 2 kilogrammes without the alidade.
