Label - Islamic universal astrolabes

Both the astrolabes shown here use the 'universal lamina' described by Islamic mathematicians in 11th-century Toledo. A standard astrolabe uses a vertical stereographic projection of the celestial sphere. These instruments are also stereographic but use a horizontal projection. [2] has the additional feature of a special form of rete rotating above the universal projection.
