English EQUINOCTIAL DIAL
1606

Gilt brass; compass-card printed from an engraved plate and coloured by hand. Signed, "Carolus Whitwell fecit".

There is a circular opening in the hinged cover enabling the compass to be seen when the instrument is closed. On top of the cover is a calendar, and, inside the cover, a table of primes and epacts, with the date "1606".

On the bottom of the instrument is a lunar volvelle and aspectarium for showing, i.a., the phases of the moon, and for converting time-readings made by moonlight to solar time.
