Case materials
Instruments were often supplied in fitted cases and there were specialist makers of cases by the 18th century. Many cases were wooden, sometimes with velvet lining, but other coverings were used, such as leather [1] and shagreen [2]. Shagreen was prepared from polished and stained rayskin.
