Narratives

The art of the astrolabe

The most spectacular of astrolabes were always seen as beautiful objects. There was considerable freedom of design, particularly in the star map of the rete. This Arsenius example uses a characteristic tulip shape in the upper part of the rete. The impression of overlapping strapwork is also typical of this 16th-century Flemish workshop.
