Inventory no. 40829 - Former Display Label

17
ASTROLABE of unknown origin
?c.1460

Not signed or dated. Gilt Brass. Diam.: 59 mm.

Rete for 4 stars, not named. The rete is unusual; the zodiac circle is reduced to a curved band, as on the Universal Lamina (see the label in the first bay of the Islamic series of astrolabes), the boundary of the rete (and of the plate) being the celestial Equator not, as is usual, the Tropic of Capricorn. The back is engraved with scales of degrees, a shadow-square and an unequal-hour diagram, but has no zodiac/calendar scale.
