From Islam to Europe
The earliest European astrolabes often echo stylistic features found on Islamic instruments. This example, probably from Spain, is particularly striking for the star pointers on its rete. These are either birds with long beaks or plain pointers with open bases. Both styles are found on Islamic instruments.
