Drawing curves

Judging by the number of instruments invented to draw it, the ellipse has been second only to the circle in mathematical popularity. Probably the largest and most elaborate ellipsograph was devised by the engineer Joseph Clement [1]. Smaller and simpler versions of the same general type are also found [2]. The range of gears in the geometrical pen [3] generates more elaborate and decorative curves than the ellipse.
