Stempel and Zeelst's astrolabe text

Gerard Stempel and Adriaan Zeelst on the astrolabe

1602 edition: Utriusque astrolabii tam particularis quam universalis fabrica et usus

In his catalogue raisonne of Louvain makers, Koenraad van Cleempoel records copies of the book at MHS, BL, Paris and Liège.

However the Bodleian has two copies of the 1602 edition (not in COPAC) - neither with plates, one of which was owned by Robert Burton and has a note of the cost of the plates as 4 shillings. Marginalia recorded (Latin transcription not wholly accurate) in Nicolas K. Kiessling, The Library of Robert Burton, Oxford Bibliographic Society, 22 (Oxford, 1988) p. 289.

1619 edition

Christ Church Special Collections has a copy of Gerardus Stempelius, Astrolabii ... tam vniuersalis, quam particularis stellati, fabrica et vsus absque matris, dorsi aut retis auxilio (Arnhem, 1619).

This is listed as a second edition and must be the revised version of the 1602 text.

Janet McMullin (Assistant Librarian, Christ Church) reported 12/12/2006 that there are no plates in the volume, and no evidence that plates were ever included.
