Narratives

Measuring horizontal and vertical

Despite their different appearance, both these instruments are designed to do the same job in land surveying. They each have semicircles to measure vertical angles and a compass with circular scale to establish and measure horizontal angles. [1] is intended to be mounted on a post or tripod, whereas [2] sits directly on the drawing paper of a surveyor's plane table.
