German THEODOLITE c.1600
Gilt and silvered brass. Signed, under the compass, around an
engraved pentagon, "Erasm[us] Haberme[l] ... fecit" [original
much worn]: apparently undated.
The horizontal circular scale is engraved with three concentric
scales, which are, starting from the outside:
1. A scale of degrees, in four quadrants of 0°-90°.
2. A scale of 'hours' divided into 24 divisions and marked
1-24.
3. A scale of 'hours' divided into 24 divisions and marked
1-12, 1-12.
The vertical semicircular scale to which the sights are attached
is divided, on the outer edge, 90°-0°-90°, and, on the inner
edge, 1-12.
