German SURVEYING INSTRUMENT 1608

Gilt and silvered brass, wood, etc. Signed, "* C * T * M * F *
* 1608 *" [i.e. Christoff Trechsler Mechanicus Fecit, 1608].
Includes: 1. A pair of folding sights.
2. A compass, to which is attached an index which can
move over scales of degrees and 'hours' (cf. the descriptive note
on miner's compasses, in the adjacent case no. 7.);
3. A vertical string-gnomon dial for latitude 51°
(the hinged gnomon-support is missing);
4. An alidade, calibrated with a scale of a linear
measure that is subdivided in part by transversals, which can move
over a semicircular scale of degrees within which is a shadow square.
The ornamental engraving includes illustrations of two allegorical
female figures with mathematical instruments.
