Types of hours

When this equinoctial dial is correctly adjusted, the time is given in ordinary, Italian and Babylonian hours. The 24 Italian hours in a day are counted from sunset, while the 24 Babylonian hours are counted from sunrise. Because the length of the daylight period varies throughout the year, these alternative hour systems give times which continuously shift in relation to the modern hour system.
