Set in Stone
This horizontal sundial is the only replica object in the exhibition. It was commissioned from an Oxford stonemason in 1998, but follows a design preserved in Islamic manuscript treatises in which the point of an upright gnomon's shadow indicates the time. Some Islamic stone sundials do survive but, intended for outdoor locations and subject to weather and damage, few remain in good condition.
