German COMPASS
Late 16th century

Gilt copper and silvered brass, Unsigned and undated.

This compass formed part of an instrument in which it was suspended (? on gimbals) so as to remain horizontal even when the instrument was tilted. (Cf. a similar compass in the gunnery and surveying instrument no. G. 582, in case no. 44).
