Exhibition: The Astrolabe, East and West

The sacred city

A plate from an astrolabe in the 'chronology' section. It is inscribed 'Mecca, Allah protect her, and Yamama. Latitude 21°40'; hours 13h33m', and has lines for finding the times of prayer. An indication of the astrolabe's existence within a shared Christian and Muslim culture is the zodiacal calendar on the back, where the names of the Christian months are given both in Arabic transliteration and in Latin.
