The Art of the Astrolabe

Astrolabes are working instruments for astronomy and astrology. Many are also vehicles for virtuoso craftsmanship. This example represents one of the high points of astrolabe artistry. Notice not only the supporting figures at the top, but the elaborate strapwork arranged to create a tulip pattern.
