Exhibition: The Astrolabe, East and West

Additions of a new owner

This astrolabe has an unusual mixture of styles: the rete seems to have been made originally in Islamic Spain and there are plates for Zaragosa and other southern latitudes. However, the engraving is partly in Lombardic script and there is a later plate for Paris. It seems that a later owner, probably French, has had the rete re-engraved and the new plate made, so that it could be used in Paris.
