Provenance
Evans bought it from Percy Webster, his
main London dealer, in 1921/22. Webster bought it at Foster's
Sale Rooms, London, in October 1921. It had been exhibited at
the Victoria & Albert Museum after being brought to
England by Colonel Cramer-Roberts. He bought it in March 1879
at a 'prize sale' in Sherpore of property brought out of
Afghanistan after the Amir of Kabul had been deposed by the
British as ruler of Afghanistan. It had belonged to the
Amir's family. It was originally made for Shah Abbas II of
Persia (1629-1666).
