Astrolabe Catalogue

Date 17th century
Place Persia
Material Brass
Acquisition Presented by Lewis Evans in 1924
Accession 1924-0/2005

Provenance

Evans bought it from Garcia, a London dealer, about 1880 (in the early days of his collection). Gunther dubbed it 'The Hunter's Astrolabe' because of the hunting scene on the throne. It is quite likely that so specific a decorative theme represents the interests of the person the astrolabe was originally made for.
