Millennium Building

Spring, 2000

THE redevelopment of the Museum is not the only building project currently going on in Oxford: within the University alone there are over a dozen major projects now under way, representing a capital investment of over £250 million. During 2000, the University is marking the contribution its building projects make to the cityscape of Oxford by designating landmark projects as ‘Millennium Buildings’.

The Museum has been selected by the University to be a Millennium Building. As such, it will be highlighted individually later in the year, a time capsule will be incorporated into the site, and its inclusion in the project will be recorded by a permanent plaque in the new extension.

Other Millennium Buildings chosen include the Pitt Rivers Museum, which has just received a new roof, the new Sackler Library and Gallery of Chinese Painting being built for the Ashmolean Museum, and a roof-top extension to the Oriental Institute. A number of extensions to renowned scientific departments have also been selected, including a new building for the Dunn School of Pathology, a new lecture theatre for the Clarendon Laboratory, and a research laboratory for the Department of Chemistry.

More recently established departments are also represented, including, predictably, the Wellcome Centre for the Study of Human Genetics and the Department of Economics.
