Calculating the Transit

This manuscript is by the Oxford astronomer Thomas Hornsby. It includes several sections devoted to calculations and analysis of the 1769 transit.
.
The open pages show him systematically combining the observations at “George’s Island” (Tahiti) with those from a wide range of other observing stations, from California to Oxford. There are many further pages given over to similar calculations. But Hornsby was not just a “computer”. He also has passages commenting on and assessing the quality of the data. Here he discusses a set of Russian observations.
