Foreign Airs

Readings of temperature and pressure were an increasingly standard aspect of routine observatory practice in Europe. The procedure was carried over to transit expeditions, where observers stationed at remote sites might encounter extremes of weather.

Both the thermometer and barometer here were made by the astronomical instrument maker John Bird, who supplied the thermometers used on Cook’s transit voyage.
