The Reflecting Telescope

This reflecting telescope by James Short was probably made for observing the 1761 transit. Short, who specialised exclusively in the manufacture of reflectors, was the preferred supplier to British expedition observers.
.
Short belonged to the elite of British instrument makers. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society who observed and published on the 1761 transit, and who was involved in planning transit expeditions. The prestige of such high-status makers was an unusual and distinctive feature of British scientific culture at the time.
