have all been paper astrolabes in books, there are also metal

Made by Egidius Coignet (Cuiniet) in Antwerp,
1560. This brass instrument has a north hemispheric terrestrial
map projected on the plate in typical stereographic projection.
The map shows, unlike the paper astrolabes in books, a well-defined
North America. The back of this astrolabe contains a universal
sundial. The universal sundial is included in Cosmographia
as a volvelle.
In effect, Cosmographia contains a complete paper version
of this astrolabe. |
