The New World has a strange appearance on the terrestrial astrolabe. The North American continent, well known by the time this instrument appeared in Cosmographia in 1524, is absent and in its place is a string of inconsequential islands. The terrestrial astrolabe has a stereographic projection of the earth, whereas most astrolabe plates have stereographic projections of the heavens. | |||
