The Marconi Bellini-Tosi Direction Finder, using a form of variometer, was used to detect the position of enemy wireless stations using direction finding equipment and a signal triangulation method. This particular system was developed by Captain H.J. Round of the Marconi Company, based on pre-World War One patents of Bellini &Tosi. This system was used by the Royal Navy and British Army to trace the position of German submarines, surface naval vessels, and Zeppelins.
