Hugo Hirst (1863-1943), later Lord Hirst, was an electrical engineer who co-founded the General Electric Apparatus Company (GEC) with Gustav Byng in 1886. In 1900, the company became a public limited company, the General Electric Company Ltd (GEC), and Hirst became the Managing Director. In 1910, he became Chairman of GEC, a position he retained until his death of heart failure in 1943.
