This is a very rare example of a fully self-contained portable transmitter and receiver. Both the set itself and the miniature magnetic detector within are the only known surviving examples of this practical development in wireless technology. The set was for designed for use on lifeboats and was both robust and completely self-contained.

The set consists of a miniature magnetic detector, transmitter with Morse key and receiver (side by side), and an empty compartment for a battery or accumulator with which to provide the high voltage for the spark gap.
