‘Images and Practice’

Spring, 1996

The British Society for the History of Science will hold a one-day meeting in Oxford on Wednesday the 12th June, to coincide with its Extraordinary General Meeting.

The theme will be ‘Images and Practice’. The day will begin at 11.15 a.m. with coffee in the Faculty of Modern History before continuing with a talk by Willem Hackmann on terrestrial magnetism and the aurora borealis. The E. G. M. will precede a break for lunch, after which Jim Bennett, Stephen Johnston and Professor Martin Kemp will offer a group of related papers centred around ‘The Geometry of War’.

Following tea, there will be a visit to the special exhibition of the same title at the Museum of the History of Science. The party will then move on to the Taylorian lecture theatre for a special lecture arranged by the Department of the History of Art, to be given by Professor Ludmilla Jordanova on the subject of ‘Historians and their Images’. This final event of the day will begin at 5 p.m.

Attendance is free and there is no need to register.
