Welcome to the Museum of the History of Science

MHS houses an unrivalled collection of early scientific instruments in the world’s oldest surviving purpose-built museum building ^[8], the Old Ashmolean on Broad Street, Oxford. We are both a department of the University of Oxford and an active public museum, offering a programme ^[9] of family-friendly events, gallery tours, talks and much more, along with taught sessions for schools ^[10].

Visits to the Museum by groups of more than 15 should be booked in advance by using the group visits booking form ^[11].

For an introduction to the Museum and its collections, come along to one of our regular tours. Led by our award-winning volunteer guides, they usually take place every Thursday at 2.30pm and 3.15pm and every Saturday at 12.30pm and 1.15pm.

For those unable to come to Oxford we produce online versions of our exhibitions ^[3], along with standalone online resources and a web version of our collections database ^[12]. For the latest additions to this site you can subscribe to our newsfeed ^[13]. ^[14]
