Many editions of Stöffler’s book on the astrolabe followed the first of 1513. This example, printed in Mainz in 1535 by Peter Jordan, includes a coloured paper astrolabe. No doubt it was meant to be cut out and assembled. There are close links between printing and instrument-making and between engraving on brass and on copper. Paper instruments are found independent of books, as adjuncts to books (as this one is), or printed or mounted on their pages alongside the text.
