Horizontal Dial
Signed by Markus Purmann
Dated 1594; Munich
Brass and silver; 60 mm in diameter

The round dial is kept in a case covered with blind-tooled leather, painted in green on the outside and in blue on the inside.

The actual dial is in silver and has a silver compass in the centre. The hour lines are numbered from 4 to 12 to 8, with a sun effigy at the bottom of the circle. The string gnomon, for latitude circa 48?, is supported by a stand decorated with arabesques which has a plummet so that the dial can be kept horizontal. On the bottom of the dial is a pierced lunar volvelle and aspectarium with the inscription 'INDEX DIERVM AETATIS LVNAE', and three bun feet. Around the sides of the dial is the signature 'HOROLOGIVM SOLIS ET LVNAE MARCVS PVRMAN MONACHY FACIEBAT 1594'.
