Astronomical Compendium
Signed by Humfrey Cole
Dated 1568; London
Gilt brass; 66 x 60 x 20 mm closed

The instrument is in the form of a book, a format highly appropriate for its first owner, the Elizabethan printer and publisher Richard Jugge, for whom the maker Humfrey Cole was also to engrave a map in 1572.

The compendium includes a quadrant, room for drawing instruments, a compass, a universal equinoctial sundial, a table of latitudes of towns and an incomplete calendar.

Like earlier English compendia (Epact 73813), a chain through its suspension ring enabled it to be worn by the owner.
