Astronomical Compendium
Unsigned
circa 1600; French
Brass; 87 x 87 x 39 mm (box)

The deep compass bowl of this compendium gives it unusually large dimensions, though its range of functions is not correspondingly extended: it incorporates only a nocturnal, equinoctial sundial and compass.

As well as the more typical foliate decoration, the maker has also included an engraved head within a roundel on each side, though these are most likely to be generalised rather than specific portraits.
