Astronomical Compendium
Signed by Christoph Schissler
Later 16th century; Augsburg
Gilt brass; 66 mm in diameter

The principal instrument of this circular compendium is an inclining sundial, used to tell the time at various latitudes. A lunar volvelle is provided to convert night-time readings by the light of the moon into solar hours, and there is also a volvelle for converting between equal and unequal hours.

The device also provides astrological information on the planet which governs the individual hours of different days.

Although signed only with the initials 'C. S.', the instrument can be confidently attributed to Christoph Schissler. Various parts are decorated with acid-etched ornament similar to that found on other instruments by this famous Augsburg maker.
