Astronomical Compendium
Unsigned
Late 16th century; German
Gilt and silvered brass; 95 x 95 x 17 mm

Though the maker of this compendium has not been identified, the many features which it shares with Epact 30417 suggest that it is by the same hand.

The compendium includes a simple astrolabe, an equinoctial ring dial, a horary quadrant, astrological and geographical tables and a lunar volvelle.

The instrument is a typical rather than outstanding representative of the genre; although it records compass directions in Latin, its other inscriptions are in German, including the names of the winds and the signs of the zodiac.
