This set of mine surveying instruments is preserved in its original solid wooden box, whose lid carries a manuscript list of its original owners. The hollowed-out base of the box retains three instruments, a hanging compass, a folding square and a small T-square. It is clear from the shape of the storage compartment that at least two other instruments were originally included in the set, one of them a hanging clinometer.
In common with other sets of German mine surveying instruments of the period, the ivory surfaces are engraved with simple but effective decoration.
