Diptych Dial
Ulrich Schniep
Dated 1579; Munich
Brass, silvered copper; 58 x 40 x 13 mm

This instrument is a typical example of the work of Ulrich Schniep. It is a diptych dial or 'viatorium', as it was called at the time.

The outer side of the dial has rings indicating the day of the month when the sun enters the zodiac and the length of the day during the year. When the length of the day varies more than one hour during one month, two dates are given.
