Gunner's Caliper
Unsigned
circa 1600; Dutch
Iron; 690 x 130 x 60 mm

The instrument consists of two hinged legs of cast iron with the measuring tips at the outer ends curving to each other. The entire instrument is painted black.

Near the middle of each leg there are rectangular slots that supported a measuring rod (now missing) from which the measure of a cannon ball could be taken.

The instrument is unsigned and its period and country of origin are conjectural. The instrument (previously catalogued as A 680) was donated by a private collector to Museum Boerhaave.
