Plane Table Alidade
Signed by Humfrey Cole
Dated 1582; London
Brass; 444 x 24 mm

Although appearing to be no more than a scale rule, this alidade was probably meant to be equipped with a sight and used for surveying with a plane table. As such it offered not only a mathematically simpler but also a less expensive alternative to more ambitious surveying instruments such as the altazimuth theodolite, also made by Humfrey Cole.
