Diptych Dial
Unsigned
circa 1600; Italian
Ivory and brass; 64 x 71 x 10 mm

This dial is very unusually shaped: it is essentially circular but the need for a straight-edged hinge gives it the overall form of a scallop.

The upper leaf of this oval shaped dial is badly cracked and the two parts are kept together by two brass plates. The inner part is simply decorated but the compass card is painted in red, green and gold.
