Nocturnal
Unsigned
circa 1560; Italian
Gilt brass; 46 mm in diameter

This small instrument has an equinoctial dial for the latitude range 30 to 60?, as well as a nocturnal mounted on its lid.

Although unsigned it is considered to be Italian, not just from its overall style, but because its compass is marked with Italian names of the winds and its table of the latitudes of places begins with six Italian cities.
