Radio Marconi

Marconi radio set

Marconi radio set

Details: Radio Marconi [pdf] / Science programme leaflet [pdf]
Key Stage: 4 and 5
Length: 1-2 hours (adaptable)
Maximum number: See Planning a visit

The Museum has a fine collection of objects related to the early development of radio transmission that once belonged to the Marconi Corporation.

This is a practical-led session that introduces students to the historical development of electrical communication from telegraphy to radio transmission. Students will have the opportunity to use telegraphic equipment to send messages in Morse code, and to experiment with a simple crystal set radio to help them understand how radio signals are received.

This session includes theoretical explanations concerning radio waves and the principles of tuning. It also offers particular insights into how science works and how scientific ideas are applied in areas such as telecommunications.
