The Museum has a remarkable collection of early Islamic instruments relating to astronomy and mathematical measurement.

This facilitated session provides an introduction to the historical cultural context of Islam and manner in which it supported developments in Science and Astronomy.

Students will have the opportunity to interpret a range of different objects and are introduced to the achievements of Muslim astronomers using ingenious instruments such as the astrolabe.

Students can have the opportunity to gain further insight by making a model of an astrolabe and learn to use it to carry out simple calculations.

This session forms part of the Museum’s Science and Islam resources for teaching and learning and may be carried out independently.
