EFL students at the Museum

We welcome visits from groups of EFL students from the many language schools in Oxford and throughout the UK. Groups should be booked in advance; see this document for full details and how to book.

The Museum holds an important position in the cultural life of Oxford, being housed in the world’s first purpose-built museum, and is a must-see for visitors to the city. Exhibits on show include internationally significant collections of scientific instruments such as Astrolabes and Sundials, as well as famous objects such as Einstein’s blackboard and equipment used in early experiments in cultivating Penicillin.

Many instruments in the collection will be new to most students, so we have devised higher and lower level trails around the museum to help provide focus to your visit. You can download pdf versions of these trails on at the bottom of this page. We encourage groups of EFL students to use these trails.

Unfortunately we are unable to produce hard copies of these resources for groups. We have a small number of clipboards available for groups to borrow from the Museum’s reception desk.

Group Bookings

Prior booking of groups is strongly recommended to ensure entry during busy periods. To book, please call 01865 277280 or email: museum@mhs.ox.ac.uk.

We are a small museum, so large groups are asked to split into smaller groups of 15 or fewer. During busy periods we may need to limit entry to one small group at a time.

Please ensure adequate supervision of groups of under 18s – groups of students without adequate supervision may be turned away.

Admission to the Museum is free.

Discover the Museum

These two trails give an introduction to the Museum for EFL students.

Beginner Trail: This trail asks students to find country names on museum labels and match to their countries on a map. It is suitable for students with a basic level of English.

Intermediate trail: This trail asks basic questions about objects in the Museum. There are also options for use of higher level language skills with open ended questions.
