Constructive Geometry

This medieval technique does not rely on a complete set of dimensions of all the parts. Instead, the size of each part is determined by applying a proportional rule. Each height is worked out as a fraction of the remainder left by the previous. A medieval mason would have learnt and committed the sequence of rules to memory.

The complete construction of a Doric base has been divided into four parts, and the procedure is taken from Leon Battista Alberti’s De architectura (1452; printed 1485).
